Women’s Impact in Business: Empowerment and Overcoming Workplace Challenges
✍️ By Christine Russel-Wittebrood
In today’s fast-paced world, the role of women in business is increasingly vital. Women are not only shattering glass ceilings but also redefining what it means to harmonize career aspirations with family life. As a mother of two children aged 9 and 13, I have navigated this journey firsthand. Through my personal experiences of motherhood and career advancement, I have gleaned invaluable insights about women’s empowerment. Although I have been fortunate not to face significant challenges in my workplace, I have heard the stories of others who have encountered various obstacles.
The Balancing Act: A Personal Journey
When I first embarked on my career, I had ambitious dreams of making a significant impact in my industry. My work was my top priority, often leading to late nights and weekend commitments. However, my life took a turn when I became a mother after several years of longing for this milestone. The beautiful yet demanding experiences of breastfeeding, sleepless nights, and the responsibilities of raising children often made me question whether I could achieve my career ambitions while being present for my family. Fortunately, my company recognized the importance of work-life balance and provided me with the support I needed to flourish. With flexible hours and understanding superiors, I was able to chase my dreams while nurturing my children.
This support was crucial to my journey. I learned that it is indeed possible to have both a fulfilling career and a loving family. I embraced the incredible multitasking abilities that women are often praised for, discovering that my home and work life could coexist in harmony. From managing work projects to organizing family activities, I found ways to integrate both aspects of my life.
The Power of Women’s Empowerment
Women’s empowerment transcends personal achievements; it involves uplifting one another. In the workplace, we have a unique opportunity to inspire and mentor others. By sharing our experiences and stories, we can exemplify the power of resilience and determination.
Fortunately, here in Thailand, we do not face the extreme challenges that women encounter in other countries. This is reflected in Thailand's ranking as one of the leading nations for women in leadership roles worldwide. Throughout my career, I have made it a priority to give back to the community, motivate, and engage with my team by fostering an atmosphere of love and respect.
Women possess a remarkable ability to create supportive networks. We can harness this power to cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. The more we collaborate and support one another, the more we elevate each other.
Navigating Workplace Challenges
Despite significant strides in gender equality, women still encounter unique challenges in the workplace. From pay disparities to the struggle for recognition in leadership roles, the hurdles can be daunting. Fortunately, I have not personally felt that this applied to me, and I consider myself very fortunate in the company I am part of.
However, one of the biggest challenges I faced was the fear of being judged for my dual roles as a mother and a professional. There were moments when I felt an overwhelming need to prove myself, fearing that my commitment to my family would overshadow my dedication to my career, and vice versa. Nevertheless, I came to the realization that I needed to stay true to myself. In doing so, I quickly understood that my fears were unfounded; they were merely products of my own thoughts.
Takeaway: Don’t Give Up on What You Want
If there’s one lesson I want to share, it’s this: don’t give up on what you want. Clearly express your desires to your employer, colleagues, and family. Open communication about your needs and aspirations is essential.
Here are some actionable insights to help you navigate your journey:
Set Boundaries: Clearly define your work and family time. Communicate these boundaries to your employer and adhere to them.
Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your partner, family, or colleagues. Building a strong support network is crucial.
Embrace Flexibility: Be open to flexible work arrangements. This can help you maintain balance and focus on both your career and family.
By integrating these strategies into your life, you can empower yourself and others to thrive in both personal and professional realms.
